I'm gross and I need help.

Feb 8, 2013

Ever since I've completely kicked the habit of biting my nails (a lifelong bad habit, mind you!) I've been pretty damn proud of myself and have rewarded myself with all the pretty nail polishes I want. But lately I've stupidly let some stress get to me and in the past couple weeks, I've started back up my even worse habit of picking at the skin around my nails. Ok, so I normally have the nervous habit of picking at my fingers a little but this is BAD. It's not only gross but it makes my hands, nails and whatever polish I have on look horrid.

My fingers are worse now than in this picture and my thumbs are to the point of bleeding and hurting. Who does this?! I'm not even sure why I'm showing you this picture. Maybe so y'all can tell me how gross it is that I pick at my fingers? How having gross hands is not conducive to being a nail polish addict and then posting mani pictures? Because I need to be reminded of that EVERY DAY.

Be glad the picture is blurry. Believe me, you don't wanna see these sicko hands clearly.
I finally removed that grape looking shiz off my nails (like I was seriously not a fan of the color. Maybe it's my skin tone? Hmm or maybe just my gross nails!) and have replaced it with Julep Oxygen Nail Treatment. I'm hoping this will actually do what it should and repair the damage I've done to my nails and make them stronger. But as far as the damage I've done to the surrounding skin, that's on me. I just need to break this habit again.

And being totally for real here, I have noticed that with less wine drinking comes more nail picking. I've had a bottle of moscato for 2 weeks now just waiting to be opened and I haven't even bothered. Now I've suddenly started tearing my fingers up. Coincidence? I think not.

So now that I've fully grossed you out with my nails, I'll leave you with this important reminder:
Stop stressing. Your pretty hands are not worth it.

Seriously life lessons right there, y'all.

I do the same thing! I thought I was the only one. I dunno what my problem is, but I always always always pick at the skin around my nails and dunno how to stop!

I say more wine! I'm sorry you're stressed. We do crappy stuff to our bodies when dealing with it. The tips of my nails have been peeling since last summer. I think it was all the gel manis I got. I can't wait to use Oxygen. I hope it helps! As far as the surrounding skin, mine is pretty bad too. I always have hangnails and it's really dry in the winter. I've been putting Sally cuticle eraser/balm on every night. It's definitely more moisturized.

You are not alone! (gross alert) I pull at the little piece of skin on the side thinking I'll just pull a little and it'll go away, but then I keep going :( I try keeping lotion on them to keep them moisturized and such but it doesn't help too much. I've heard that putting vaseline on your nail beds then wearing gloves to bed will help, but seriously? "Aint nobody got time for dat"

Open that wine girly!!
And I jut used the oxygen treatment today. My nails chip and peel and I make it worse by peeling them.

I don't pick my fingers but I do pick at my nails. I have to keep them polished without chips or else I'll chip all the polish and break all my nails. I say drink up! You and your nails deserve it!

use vaseline at night before bed on your hands/nails/cuticals. Get the liquid vitamin E by Sally Hansen, put that on before or after you put the vaseline on. It will help after a couple days. The Vitamin E also helps your skin if you have breakouts or scars. fun fact!

I also purchased some hand cream from my nail salon. I went there and showed them my problem and it helped me so much. It has a horse on the bottle. should cost you no more than 5-10 bucks.

I have a friend that does the same thing. I told her that when she starts picking to put a cute band-aid over it so she won't maybe it will help?

I have to agree with you ... that color ... not so cute ;-)

Hope the stress levels are lowing! Have a great weekend!

It doesn't help b/c my left middle finger is missing the tip b/c I chopped it off as a toddler two... fell of w/ those old school dialing phone... yeap... I do the biting n peeling of skin around........... *SIGH**** When my mani/pedi sis (she's licensed & her in-laws own a few nail shops) do nails for other sis/friends... I tease her, I whip my fingers out and say, ME NEXT! And we both laugh.......... LOL!

I do the same thing when I'm stressed! Most of the time I don't even realize that I'm doing it until the damage is done. It's terrible! :(

I agree about the nail biting, I quit awhile ago and if I don't have paint on my nails or a shellac manicure I tend to pick, I guess I tell myself if I pay for them to look nice I won't pick? haha!

Dude. My fingers are a hot MESS. I bite my cuticles non-stop!!! :(

Put some vaseline on your cuticles before bed every night. I've picked mine for as long as I can remember and this is the only solution I've found. :)

I definitely bite my nails. Or instead if I paint my nails, I chip away at the polish till it's all gone. I do like having my nails painted. But for me, it just isn't worth it since I'm lucky if I can go 24 hours without peeling the polish off.

My hubby bites the skin around his nails all the time, almost always to the point of bleeding. If you find a good solution to kick the habit, I'd love to hear it!!! I can't exactly bribe him with new nail polish, haha. :)
