Nail Files + Mani Tutorial! [Guest Post]

May 10, 2013

I'm on my way home today and I can hardly freaking wait to kiss my girl and my baby daddy. I'm also super excited to have such a nail pro guest posting for me today! Thank you so much, Kali for your post, I LOVE this mani! Go say hi to Kali!

Hello lovely ladies, and Happy Friday! I'm Kali at Kali Now Living and I am honored and excited to guest post for Jessica. I love her blog, really love the adorable pics of Violet and pretty much need her sense of humor to get me through the work week. Let's wish Jessica a safe trip home!

I've been addicted to nail polish for a few months now (ok, not really but kind of) and really look forward to Friday's Nail Files link up with Tara and a few other great gals. A few weeks ago I shared a tri-color spring mani, and I've had several requests for a tutorial. It's pretty much foolproof and easy as 1, 2, 3, 4!
Start with a base coat. Add two coats of your favorite nail polish color and let dry. Add a diagonal stroke of your second polish color, working from the side of the nail towards the center. Let dry. Working from the opposite side of your nail, add another diagonal stroke using your third color.

This manicure features Julep's Helen, Toni and Zelda. I'd love to see what fun color combinations you come up with and hope you all have a great weekend.

Fictional Kind of Love [Guest Post]

May 8, 2013

I'm so happy that Rhonda offered to take over for me today. When I saw her post, I knew this was just another reason her and I are friends - boy. crazy. I still am. How about you? Be sure to go pay Rhonda a visit! There's more where this came from! :)

Big love goes out to Jessica for having me over to post on one of my favorite blogs! If you aren't familiar with me and my blog, Hepburn & Houndstooth, here are five facts about me.

me
1. I am the mother to 3 boys and the stepmother to 1.
2. I can drink most men under the table.
3. I am a fitness and health lover (and blogger).
4. I am a gay-lovin', Jesus-lovin', Obama-lovin' liberal Democrat small-town Southern girl. It doesn't make a lot of sense to some, but it's just right for me.
5. I would rather blog first thing in the morning than sleep.

So, let's talk about something fun, as I love to do. Heavy material here this morning, folks.

I have been collecting TV boyfriends since I was a kid. Hello, Randy Taylor.

I was certain he and I would be together forever. Then Home Improvement went off the air and I was at a loss.

Good thing I found others to keep me warm at night.

Don't get it twisted, I love my husband. However, I'm pretty sure that these characters would want to be my man if they, you know, existed in real life.

Um.... what was I going to say about him? He's so... pretty. Oh, and clever, witty, intelligent, and the the HOTTEST white collar criminal ever. I think he's The One.

Come over to my blog and tell me about your fictional boyfriends!

Guest Post: Corrin talks Target Designer Lines

Oct 18, 2012

Welcome, Corrin, one of my favorite Austin bloggers. She has the best taste in home decor, clothing, accessories and more...A stop by her blog always has me adding something else to my wish list. Just like I now want the vases below. Go say hi!

I don’t know about you, but I’m a sucker for a good Target designer line (I won’t even admit how long I stood in line for a Missoni quilt last year). The latest, to be released in just a few days, is a line of home accessories from designer Nate Berkus.

Nate Berkus for Target is what I call (and please excuse my lack of technical designer lingo) retro traditional with a tribal twist. He’s no stranger to mass-market design having a successful HSN line under his belt.

You can get a peak at some of the collection on Curbed. The pieces I’m loving are more accessories than necessities; treasures and chachkies instead of linens and drapes.

The sea urchins are a must.

As are the gold vases.

And I love the sculpture-like quality of this table lamp. A pair would look great in just about any room.

I have the unshakable urge to spray paint these tortoise shells gold.

Are you eyeing anything from the collection?

Corrin lives in Austin, Texas, and blogs at www.ohheywhatsup.com. She loves fro-yo, fashion, and can really cut a rug.

Guest Post: Christina Talks Halloween Drinks

Oct 17, 2012

Welcome one of my blog besties, Christina!! She and I have so much in common and I truly wish we lived next door to one another. I'm pretty sure I'd be knocking on her door every day, ready for another Mommy Happy Hour ;) Be sure to stop by her blog!

Hi! I'm Christina and I blog over at Easily Entertained  where I talk about all things pop culture: books, movies, fashion, Hollywood hunks, television, celebrity gossip, and music. I also throw in some posts about my husband and two sons and our adventures in Seattle. Stop by and say hi! We already have something in common...we love Jessica! Thanks for having me, friend!

If you're anything like me, Halloween might not be as exciting as it once was. Long gone are the days of late night parties, hilarious costumes, and crazy adventures. Now it's all about letting my four year old pick out his costume and hope and pray that he doesn't change his mind before Halloween night. We'll trick or treat around the neighborhood, pass out candy to our friends, and let the kids stay up way too late...8:30pm. When the kids are asleep my husband and I will raid their plastic pumpkins. Exciting times, let me tell you. But there are treats we can indulge in other than bite size Snickers and disgusting Smarties. I'm talking about adult beverages! Here are some I can't wait to try:

Vanilla vodka, half and half, simple syrup, white chocolate shavings
Brain Hemorrhage
Peach schnapps, Baileys Irish Cream, grenadine
Brain Hemmorage

Black cherry vodka, grenadine, cola, maraschino cherries
Dracula's Kiss with Effen Black Cherry Vodka

Vodka, Grand Marnier, frozen raspberries, beet juice, lemon juice, seltzer, sugar, ice
Vampire Punch

Gin, vermouth, pimiento stuffed olives, radishes

Gin, vermouth, ice, pickled baby beets

Vanilla vodka, Adult Chocolate Milk, rum, chambord

Vodka, Grape Kool-Aid, ginger ale, sugar, water

Rum, cream of coconut, heavy cream, pineapple juice, orange juice

Vodka, 7 Up, Pop Rocks
Ghoul-tini

Vodka, rosemary-lemon syrup, lemon juice, ice

And if you want to get really crafty, try these garnishes!

Who says kids get to have all the fun?
Will you pour yourself a spooky drink on Halloween? I want to get my hands on some Adult Chocolate Milk and make a Bloody Berry.

Guest Post: Kim Talks Football Food

Oct 15, 2012

Welcome, Kim! She's such a sweet girl and I'm so glad she joined the Fall swap recently so I could find her blog! Go pay her a visit!! After you read about her yummy recipes of course ;)

Hi everyone! First off, I'd like to thank Jessica for giving me the opportunity to be a guest blogger while she's away - I'm a huge fan of her site so the opportunity to be able to be featured on You Are My Color is amazing for me!

In case you don’t know me, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Kim, and I’m a twenty-something law student fromWisconsin. This summer I married my high school sweetheart, a twenty-something dairy farmer, and together we’re raising a corgi puppy and just trying to love every challenge that life throws our way. We’re actually currently living in a “long distance marriage” – as I live in the state capital, Madison, during the week while I’m attending law school, and he lives near Green Bay where we grew up (Go Packers!) In the blogging part of my life, I recently made a big move from Wordpress, where I had a blog called Life. Love. Law. for almost 2 years, to Blogger – I now blog at my own little corner of the Internet called Latte and a Prayer.

That’s us at the Packers/Bears game this year!
As you can imagine living in both Madison and Green Bay – the two biggest sports cities in the state in fall - football has been a really big part of my life for basically forever. I’m a die-hard Packer fan, but nothing compares to my love for the Wisconsin Badgers! Either way, football parties on Saturdays and Sundays are a great excuse to get together with great friends, have a few drinks, and eat some really good (but not so good for you) food. I really love to cook, and some of my favorite recipes are awesome dips or finger foods that work great for tailgating or football parties. Warning: these are not in any way low-fat or low-cal dishes!

Jalapeño Popper Dip

I get asked to share this recipe more than any other! It’s super simple, but tastes soooo good.

What you need:
16oz cream cheese
1 c. mayonnaise
4 oz. chopped green chiles
2 oz. diced jalapeño peppers
1 c. grated parmesan cheese

Directions: Combine the mayo and cream cheese until smooth. Mix in the peppers and top with grated cheese. Transfer mixture to a microwave or oven-safe container and bake until warm. Enjoy! I love it with pretzels, tortilla chips, or crackers.

Lower fat/lower calorie notes: I use the 1/3 fat Neufchatel cream cheese and it works great. You can use low fat mayo if you really want to cut out most of the calories in this dish, but the full fat version really does taste much better.

Buffalo Chicken Dip
What the dip should look like before you mix all of the ingredients together – creamy, cheesy, chicken-y, spicy goodness.
 What you need:
2 packages of Neufchatel cream cheese
1 cup ranch dressing
1 cup Frank’s Red Hot Sauce (or other buffalo-style sauce)
2-3 small to medium sized chicken breasts
At least 1.5 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Directions: Combine softened cream cheese, ranch, and 1 cup cheddar cheese in a crock pot or microwave safe dish, and set aside. Cook the chicken breast over medium heat – diced or shredded works best for dipping purposes! When the chicken is completely cooked, add the hot sauce and bring to a boil. Cook the chicken for another 2 to 3 minutes to let the sauce thicken slightly. Add the chicken & hot sauce mixture to the cream cheese mixture. Combine thoroughly, then continue adding cheddar cheese until the dip achieves your desired thickness. I’m from Wisconsin, so we can never have too much cheese in our tailgate dips! If you’re making in a crock pot, turn on low while you’re serving to keep the dip warm. Otherwise just pop in the microwave to melt the rest of the cheese and enjoy! Pretzels are my favorite, but this is also good with bread, chips, or crackers.

Homemade Butterfingers

Although it might not be obvious why at first, these homemade Butterfinger candies are perfect for this time of year. Why? They only have three ingredients, one of which is…candy corn!

What you need:
1 lb. candy corn
16 oz. creamy peanut butter
1 package Bakers melting/dipping chocolate

Melt the candy corn in the microwave, stirring every 30 seconds to make sure it doesn’t burn. Once fully melted, stir in the peanut butter. Transfer the mixture to a square pan lined with parchment paper, and transfer to the freezer to harden. Once the peanut butter mixture is completely cooled, cut into squares and dip in melted chocolate. Place on a wax paper lined cookie sheet to set, then enjoy! Store in the refrigerator for best results.

I think there’s about a weeks worth of calories in this post, but I swear these dips are totally worth the splurge! Do you have any favorite party recipes that you’re “known” for? Mine is totally that jalapeño dip. :)

Guest Post: Mishi Talks Trends...or not

Oct 14, 2012

Welcome, one of my newest faves, Mishi! She just recently turned 30 too so we're both part of the old lady club which is nice ;) One of the her first posts I read had me rolling laughing. She is just an awesome lady. Be sure to visit her and say hi!

Hey, I'm Mishi.
I'm gonna tell you a little something about how I am probably never gonna be "that" girl.

Ok. so I practically stalked this chick the other day in HomeGoods.
My exact words to my friend were...
"This chick looks like she is from Pinterest!"
(from Pinterest? yes. I said that.)
True story.

Blazer. Cute top. Skinny jeans. Heels.
This chick had it all.
Chances are she does have a blog and is on pinterest.
And if I knew who she was I would most probably read her blog, love her style and wish I could wear blazers.

However.
I can not.
I don't like anything that makes me look like a I have wide shoulders and even though I don't, blazers make me self-conscious.
I also don't watch football, tailgate, drink wine (a Bahama Mama made me sick once), or wear heels.

I have come to the conclusion.
I am never gonna be "that" girl.
 I don't follow 97% of trends.
That kinda stopped back in the 90's when we all wore those scrunchie socks in layers and slap bracelets.
We were all singing Lisa Loeb too.
Don't play like you don't know the song.
You do.

Ok. I lied, just a little before.
I did also try the Victoria Beckam hair cut.
Didn't everyone?
I will dig up a photo from my fabulous Facebook profile photos album so you don't have to....

It did not make me look more like Victoria Beckham.

So, along the way I've just embraced that I am not very fashionable and what is "in style"
just doesn't always work for me.
You will never find me on my blog modeling any new trendy fashions.
I will forever leave that up to the real fashion bloggers that I follow.
The ones who really can wear blazers and skinny jeans and in the meantime I've learned to just embrace "me"...
a girl who wears sparkly flats, tries desperatly to cover her "muffin top" (cause let's face it that is a trend no one wants to follow) and has her hair in a pony tail too many days to count.

But I will tell you that....
sometimes, just sometimes you happen to be a girl who loves to rock some leopard print
and it suddenly out of nowhere it becomes fabulously trendy.
An unexpected score.

 So, shhhh!!!!
Don't tell anyone when I am rocking these leopard print rain boots that I am not "that" girl.
Some random chick in HomeGoods may tell her friend that I am. :)

Guest Post: Kelly Talks Weight Loss

Oct 13, 2012

Welcome to Kelly! Our bloggy friendship definitely started over nail polish but throw in a love of beer, a love for dogs and boom - instant friend! But not only is she awesome, she's an inspiration too! Read about her amazing weight loss journey and then swing by her blog to tell her how much she's kicking ass! ;)

Hi everyone! Kelly aka kjpugs here, and I’m so glad that Jessica is letting me guest post! I bonded with Jessica over nail polish (and the awesome brand that she can buy in Texas that us Floridians can’t!) and I’ve been a huge fan ever since. Currently, I’m plotting to switch out one of my pugs for V, I hope she won’t notice!

The things I probably blog about the most over at kjpugs are 1) pugs, obviously 2) nail polish and 3) my weight loss journey. Pugs are the joy of my life - I have three! - and nail polish is basically my favorite hobby. But my weight loss journey has been going on for more than a year, and I have lost more than 40 pounds towards my 60 pound loss goal!

I knew I had two triggers, and they were definitely carbs and sugar. I would binge on them all the time, and wasn’t getting enough nutrients from my diet. And to make matters worse- I could just keep eating, like a bottomless pit. I love quantity! I’ve tried losing weight in the past (somewhat successfully) but it was hard to cut down on these items without adding healthier things in.

One of the best things I’ve found to replace my carb love is spaghetti squash. I blogged one recipe here, but I love trying new ways to prepare it. I’ll make it with homemade pasta sauce and turkey meatballs, or my current favorite- General Tso sauce, green onions, and cashews. It’s very low calorie, but more importantly, it’s SQUASH, not carbs, that’s filling you up.

People who know me also know my obsession - BRUSSELS SPROUTS. I blogged recipes for both sautéed sprouts and shredded sprouts. There are so many options- lots of people like to roast them also, which is very easy and hands off. It’s not a taste for everyone, but it’s an easy recipe that I can eat lots of volume for not a lot of calories. Another green option might be broccoli, if you’re into that stuff. Find new ways to spice and flavor familiar foods to mix it up.

And if you’re like me, and like french fry style finger foods, why not try homemade sweet potato fries or zucchini sticks? These recipes take a little more work than heating a bag of frozen french fries in the oven, but they offer a bigger nutritional bang for your buck.

Eating right hasn’t worked alone though. Quantity is also important. I began my journey by doing Weight Watchers at my job. When we moved from Indiana to Florida in May, I decided to switch to a free option - My Fitness Pal. It allowed me to set a daily calorie goal (based on how fast I wanted to lose, and how often I planned to work out) and track the food I eat. I can see how many calories are in the food I eat, and can track it, aiming to stay at or below my calorie goal. I also connect with friends on MFP - you can see if they’ve hit a milestone, lost weight, or tracked that day (and what they tracked, if they allow you to. I keep mine private.)

Working out helps too. I’m working on “couch to 5k” right now… goodness gracious it’s tough. But having MFP friends who are doing it, or have done it, motivates the heck out of me, and gives me someone to complain with.

But the most helpful part of all was my husband B joining my efforts. I lost more than 40 pounds over 13 months. He has lost more than 60 pounds in five months! His goal is to lose 120 pounds, and he’s more than halfway there. It makes it easier to be careful about what I eat when the person I eat most often with cares too!

So, join me on MFP (my profile is here!) and check out some of the recipes I shared. If you are trying to lose weight or get fit, find a community for yourself! It’s fun to share tips and “little wins” with one another, and it makes the experience more enjoyable and often, more successful! And be adventurous in the kitchen, you never know what you mind end up liking if you try.

Thanks for letting me share this part of my life, Jessica! I hope you are enjoying your trip!

Guest Post: Jessica Talks Fall Favorites

Oct 12, 2012

Welcome to Jessica! She is just the nicest girl and I think it's so neat that we share the same first AND middle name! Be sure to stop by her blog!
I’m so glad Jessica is letting me take over her blog for the day!
She is just the sweetest person, and isn’t V just adorable?

I’m Jessica and I blog over at Dream More.
I usually blog about my life, love, and furbaby Shadow, but since October is upon us, I thought I would talk about some of my favorite fall things.

1. Pumpkins and anything pumpkin flavored/scented.

I just love the shape of pumpkins in general.
Pumpkin pie, duh!

Pumpkin scented candles

Pumpkin patches in general.

What person doesn’t love going to pick out the perfect pumpkin?

2. Corn mazes

By far the best corn maze in the area. And they’re always more fun in the dark.

3. Candy!

Who doesn’t get excited when they see an entire aisle dedicated to Halloween candy?

4. Yearly traditions
Foy’s Halloween Store is a yearly thing for a lot of people in the area, including Zach. Every year, people will come from all over just to go to the Foy’s stores. They are open year round, but Autumn is the best season because they are completely stocked with all things Halloween. It’s so much fun just to go and see what they have.

Although Autumn isn’t my favorite season, it is definitely number 2 on my list!

If you ever want to read more about my life, love and Shadow, just click this link here!

Thank you so much, Jessica, for letting me take over your blog for a day!
I hope you’re enjoying your 10 day trip!
